This Heron Drum holds a special place in my heart. It has taken me a long time to list him for sale, knowing he is not for me, but still finding the thought of not having his presence sat behind me one that had been hard to let go.
He is magnificent, with the most amazing deep resonance that moves you straight into depths of your heart.
Made from Red Deer hide, who roamed the lands in the Highlands of Scotland, the largest Deer on these isles. The Gaelic for red deer is fiadh ruadh and in the Highlands people once called them ‘fairy cattle’ believing fairies milked them on mountain tops and with stories of woodland deities like Diana, Artemis and the God Cernunnos all being closely associated with Deer, there are clues to some of what this beautiful drum contains, held with grace, gentleness, devotion, speed, agility and intuition.
His 20 Inch Oak frame is continually fire etched with Oak Leaves and Acorns, a holding of such strength here. I have 13 oak trees that circle my home. Each one with their own unique way of being in the world, with different energies, perspective and stories – there is some unspoken language of knowing Oaks in this way. When I walk the boundaries here I often sense these elders are deep in council and holding and balancing the membranes between Human and More than Human Kin. That sense of holding is powerfully felt in this drum and I suspect this will be a drum who will gather people, to journey with both the seen and the unseen, collectively and in community.
Oaks are stepped in Folklore & Myth. They are said to hold tremendous healing powers, which some say can bring the greatest healing simply by walking around an Oak tree and wishing the illness to be carried off by the first bird that fly’s from its branches.
In Cornwall it was said a nail driven into an oak cured toothache, while in Wales, rubbing the oak with the palm of your left hand on Midsummer’s Day kept you healthy all year.
Oaks are said to give a special virtue to other plants that grew upon its trunk or branches, such as the mistletoe and polypody fern. The herbalist Gerard said, ‘that which growth on the bodies of olde Okes is preferred before the rest: in steede of this most do use that which is found under the Okes….’
Oaks symbolise Strength, protection, steadfastness.
And Lastly the Heron. A winged one who is very special to me, they are always around when magic is afoot. Herons speak to me of the one who transcends the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, symbolising expansion of awareness and the ubiquity of consciousness.
They represent, Purity, transformation and wisdom, intertwined with renewal, rejuvenation and rebirth - an ever present reminder that we are all a part of a larger cycle of life and death.
I suspect if he calls to you, he is in someway the threads of your beloved.
Birthed in a beautiful Ceremony, this one has been cleansed with Herbs grown on these lands and harvest by my hands and is now ready to fly.
He comes with a Hand Felted wool beater & anointing oil, plus suggestions for an Awakening the Drum Ceremony & Care Instructions.
