Here is the Creation Story……
As the Wolf Moon gathered in the sky, piercing the darkness of this wintering time this drum called itself forth from the places in the betwixt and between. The hide was bathed in waters drawn from the depths of the Earth and surrounded by Labradorite as it rested and softened under the light of the Full Moon.
This is one is made from Red Stag Hide, who roamed in the Highlands of Scotland and was carefully prepared. The Gaelic for red deer is fiadh ruadh and in the Highlands people once called them ‘fairy cattle’ believing fairies milked them on mountain tops and with stories of woodland deities like Diana, Artemis and the God Cernunnos all being closely associated with Deer, there are clues to some of what this beautiful drum contains, held with grace, gentleness, devotion, speed, agility and intuition.
Held on a 16-inch Birch wood Frame who I walked with amongst the old Birch Woods down the lane. These woodlands are places of magical beings. In the springtime I drink the sap drawn up through their roots and in the Autumn I harvest beautiful Fly Agaric mushrooms who grow amongst their moss covered roots. Birch Woods remind me of Will ‘ O’ the Wisps filled with elemental beings and the Fae. The birch tree is a symbol of regeneration and transformation, closely linked to spiritual growth and self-discovery.
Hand painted around the edges are symbols of the 4 directions:
Earth, respresented by the Oak leaves and the acorn ,
Air represented by the mythical butterfly ,
Fire represented by the Phoenix Phoenix
and Water - the Fish
interspersed with Spirals and the lemniscate - the most ancient of scared symbols. There is a small ‘Spirit Hole’ in the hide as tucks over the frame - Spirit Holes are a naturally formed hole in the hide that have stayed during the birthing process. They are considered a rare & special addition to a Drum. Spirit holes have several associations, but in this case I sense this one is calling to the archetype of the Wounded Healer, weaving in the power and strength that is held in our wounds and bringing forth a particular texture for healing ourselves or others.
There is a magic in this drum that will sing beautifully to those who are seeking or living a more cyclical way of being, woven with a deep connection to Mother Earth, and those ready to deep into their healing grounds.
All my drums are birthed in deep ceremony and are cleansed with beloved plant kin, harvested from my lands.
