The hide this drum is from the Highlands of Scotland from one of my favourite suppliers. In the Celtic traditions Red Deer are held in high regard and are closely intertwined with nature, spirituality, and cultural heritage. They are symbols of renewal, transformation, strength, virility, and are viewed as graceful spiritual guides.
The Red Deer and stag are considered some of the most sacred animals in Celtic mythology.
The birchwood hoop, upon which this hide is stretched, symbolizes regeneration, embodying the spirit of a pioneer tree, traditionally used for the Witch’s besom, Beltane fires and Maypoles, and Yule logs.
Referred to as the "White Lady of the Woods," the Birch tree is a symbol of strength and elegance. Known as one of the earliest plants to leaf out in spring, it has become a representation of rebirth. The Birch tree holds significant value in Celtic, European, and Native American folklore and is connected to the Norse rune Berkana, as well as Beith, the initial character of the Ogham script.
In my dreams the handpainted image on this drum rose from a pile of leaves, browning on the ground, half bird, half tree. Their wings stretched out behind them as they called to me that they were wild Fury, rising from what has died or been left behind and the gold they bring with them.
This feels a powerful drum to reimagine with, to find the gifts in compost.
All my drums are birthed in deep ceremony and are cleansed with beloved plant kin, harvested from my lands.
